Day Treks
PILLAR POINT — 1.5 hours
This trek offers stunning views of Farewell Spit, and Mount Taranaki in the North Island can be seen on a clear day. Pillar Point was a radar station during the Second World War. The light is solar powered with a battery backup.
PUPONGA BEACH — 1.5 hours
There's a little of everything here; some hill riding…a chance to explore the old Puponga port… the old relic that lay across the beach… scenic views of Goat Island, even the odd seal here and there…the option of a canter along the beach. Enjoy all the options this short trek has to offer.
THE OLD MAN RANGE TREK — 2.5.hours
This is the ultimate in overland trekking. The views are absolutely stunning. This trek takes you through farmland with easy hill riding. You climb until you are 166 metres (511ft) above sea level. The views are incredible – you can see ALL of Farewell Spit, ALL of Golden Bay, the Tasman Sea, and, on a clear day, Mount Taranaki is visible; 360 degrees of fabulous views. This trek can be ridden at a leisurely pace or a little faster if you want a bit of excitement.
WHARARIKI BEACH — 3 hours
One of the most magnificent West Coast beaches. Wharariki has a beauty all of its own. There are aged macrocarpa trees, huge sand dunes, and large rock formations with amazing caves with seals, birdlife and a white sand beach that stretches far into the distance.
Horse lovers can fulfill their dreams with a gallop down this beach. For those who wish to go more slowly and soak up the magic of this beach, well, this is not a problem.
This trek is highly recommended and suitable for most people.
TRIANGLE VALLEY — 2 hours
This trek offers some wonderful riding over the tussock-covered hills. The manuka trees are bent and twisted, sculptured by nature and time. This is a great ride – the views of Farewell Spit are fantastic. Then you return by the same route.
TRIANGLE VALLEY/OLD MAN RANGE TREK COMBINED — 3 to 3.5 hours
This is an increasingly popular trek. The riding is great and the views that these two routes offer are nothing short of breathtaking... Highly recommended.
Golden Bay is just over the hill from Nelson and is the entrance to the Abel Tasman and Kahurangi National Parks.
